What is the theory test?
The UK driving theory test has two parts: a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception test. You must pass both parts in the same session.
Multiple choice section
You will face 50 questions drawn from the DVSA question bank. You need 43 correct answers to pass. Questions cover highway code, road signs, vehicle safety, and driving in different conditions.
Hazard perception
You watch 14 video clips and must click when you spot a developing hazard. One clip has two hazards. Maximum score per hazard is 5 points; you need 44 out of 75 to pass.
How to prepare
Use the official DVSA theory test kit app
Read the Highway Code cover to cover
Practise hazard perception daily — reaction timing matters
Take mock tests until you consistently score above 45 out of 50
Booking your theory test
Book via the official DVSA website. Tests cost 23 pounds. You need your UK provisional licence number. Most test centres have slots within 2 to 4 weeks.
On test day
Bring your provisional licence photocard. Arrive 15 minutes early. Mobile phones must be switched off. You get 57 minutes for the multiple choice section.
If you fail
You must wait 3 clear working days before rebooking. Use the time to review your weak areas — your result will show which topics you struggled with.
